Pre-AP English II: IWA #4 24-Hour Reprieve

Because of the SNAFU this afternoon with Patriot Academy, you have a 24-hour window to email me your IWA #4. Unless you have already made arrangements with me by now (Friday, February 24th, 5:01 PM), I must receive your IWA by 5:00 PM on Saturday, February 25th, in order for it to be eligible for credit.

Don't see this message? Bummer. Forget to attach your essay to the email? Ouch. Take a nap at 4:00 PM and don't wake up until 5:00:01? Most unfortunate.

Solutions to common problems:
  • No computer? Public library.

  • Banned from the public library? Make a friend.

  • No one wants to be your friend? Bribe them.

  • No one took your bribe? Be prepared for IWA 4.1.

Other than that, enjoy your weekend.

    IWA 4

Novelist and playwrights often use the names of their charachters to add meaning to their work. In Anthem, Rand uses irony and allusion in her characters' names to help the reader appreciate the human need to live in a free society.
In Anthem, irony plays a big role in carrying across points and helping the reader fully understand subjects, including the characters need to live in a free society. The main character Equality-7 is different from others in his society. He disagrees with his superiors, and wants the freedom to share his ideas. Equality is something that he does not want. He feels he is smarter than his peers and that he has something to contribute to. He yearns for a free society, where individuality isnt bad, you make your own decisions, and people have the freedom to do what they want to do. In Anthem Equality-7's teachers tell him "Dare not choose in your minds the work you would like to do when you leave the Home of the Students. You shall do that which the Council of Vocations shall prescribe for you." No one is allowed to choose what they want to do in their lives. All he wants is to be a scholar in the Home of the Scholars. Another characters name is ironic is Liberty-5. Liberty is the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on ones way of life. Liberty-5 is a street sweeper. In "straight and thin as a blade of iron" shes strong, and beautiful. Shes proud and fearless, an example of this is when she says "Your eyes are as a flame, but our brothers have neither hope nor fire. Your mouth is cut of granite, but our brothers' are soft and humble. Your head is high, but our brothers' cringe. You walk, but our brothers crawl. We wish to be damned with you, rather than blessed with all our brothers'. Do as you please, with us, but do not send us away from you." She doesnt want to follow the rules, in a society where rules and laws are the total way of life.
As well as irony, allusion shows how they want to live in a free society. They changed their names to Prometheus and Gaea. This is allusion because they were both the names of creator figures in greek mythology. Prometheus rebelled and brought light to the humans, even though he wasnt not supposed to, and Gaea was mother earth; she gave birth to the first gods. This shows their yearning for a free society, a new society that they could rule. It would symbolize a rebirth.
Equality-7 and Liberty-5 want a new society, a free society, where individuality is okay. Rand helps the reader understand this by using irony, and allusion.
